Vampire - the archetype which unifies the world
from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire :
- - "The notion of vampirism has existed for millennia; cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Hebrews, Ancient Greeks, and Romans had tales of demons and spirits which are considered precursors to "modern" vampires. - Modern new superstition, same archetype: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire : "Almost every nation has associated blood drinking with some kind of revenant or demon. The Ancient Indian deity Kali with fangs, and a garland of corpses or skulls, was intimately linked with the drinking of blood. - Tales of vetalas, ghoul-like beings that inhabit corpses, have been compiled in the Baital Pachisi, a prominent story in the Kathasaritsagara tells of King Vikramāditya and his nightly quests to capture an elusive one.... Pishacha, the returned spirits of evil-doers or those who died insane, also bear vampiric attributes. ... Even Egypt had its blood-drinking goddess Sekhmet."
- - - "Various regions of Africa have folkloric tales of beings with vampiric abilities: in West Africa the Ashanti people tell of the iron-toothed and tree-dwelling asanbosam,... and the Ewe people of the adze, which can take the form of a firefly and hunts children.''
- - - "Aztec mythology described tales of the Cihuateteo, skeletal-faced spirits of those who died in childbirth who stole children and entered into sexual liaisons with the living, driving them mad."
- - - "Rooted in older folklore, the modern belief in vampires spread throughout Asia with tales of ghoulish entities from the mainland, to vampiric beings from the islands of Southeast Asia. India also developed other vampiric legends. The Bhūta or Prét is the soul of a man who died an untimely death. It wanders around animating dead bodies at night, attacking the living much like a ghoul."
- - - "Legends of female vampire-like beings who can detach parts of their upper body occur in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. There are two main vampire-like creatures in the Philippines: the Tagalog mandurugo ("blood-sucker") and the Visayan manananggal ("self-segmenter")."
- - - "Jiang Shi (traditional Chinese: 僵 or 殭屍; simplified Chinese: 僵尸; pinyin: jiāngshī; literally "stiff corpse"), sometimes called "Chinese vampires" by Westerners, are reanimated corpses that hop around, killing living creatures to absorb life essence (qì) from their victims."
- - - "Belief in vampires has been described as the result of people of pre-industrial societies attempting to explain the process of death and decomposition." ... or.... or... or... ?
Probably in all civilisations there were - or still are - religious ceremonies including to sacrifice animals (or in the past here and there also humans). This raises the question: What symbolic meaning got the blood in the ceremony?
Worldwide occurencies of regional cannibalism might have contributed to the proliferation of "vampire" archetypes.
The worldwide fact of consuming animal blood as food, this requires to define the limits of this habit - with the result of creating cruel tales.
Probably all civilisations include the superstition that using animals as food would transfer some specific qualities of these animals to those consuming them. This superstition is still a reality, think of some supposed aphrodisiacs like the rhinoceros horn. Still now, many in several countries believe that it has aphrodisiac properties.
So the vampire archetype is composed from various facts which are present worldwide in human civilisation.

Love is the only thing we can carry with us when we go, and it makes the end so easy. - (Louisa May Alcott)
If an Arab in the desert were suddenly to discover a spring in his tent, and so would always be able to have water in abundance, how fortunate he would consider himself; so too, when a man who ... is always turned toward the outside, thinking that his happiness lies outside him, finally turns inward and discovers that the source is within him. - (Seren Kierkegaard)

Once upon a time... The production and distribution of registered music required since 1900-2000 the possession of capital (for technology reasons only possible as mass production). Now music distribution is open to everybody.... the world of music distribution will never be again as it was during one century. aha7.com helps to take part in the beginning of the future - hence back to "before 1900". Most of the music consumers money is again for the artists, the musicians, the authors, the creative people. The era of music distributors is over forever. They know it - but do not yet dare to believe it. At present we are experiencing the distributors last battle of their lost war. (Photo: © 2008 Don Pedro & site admin. aha7.com)
